New cable-to-cable housings and panel feed-throughs from Harting

01 June 2012

Harting has introduced a range of Han PushPull cable-to-cable housings providing IP 65/67 protected cabling configurations, as well as a range of new panel feed-throughs in extremely robust metal housings for use with its PushPull products.

The new housings allow pre-assembled, individually tested system cables and cable length extensions to be used on site. Cables are easily adapted to fit a particular requirement, and the risk of errors is minimised. If an existing tested system cable that has been pre-assembled in the works is not enough for cabling the plant, the appropriate additional extension cable can be used to ensure that plant cabling is completed to requirements and using optimal lengths. This means that users obtain factory-tested system cables with a functional guarantee, along with the required freedom for on-site cabling.

The housings can be used for Industrial Ethernet communications and power transmission with the appropriate contact inserts fitted to the Han PushPull family variant 4 (to IEC 61076-3-103) and 14 (to IEC 61076-3-1117). A bandwidth of up to 10Gbit/s can be achieved with a reliable AWG 22-27 conductor cross section for the transmission of industrial Ethernet. For power transmission, using five contacts, up to 690V and 16A can be carried with a conductor cross-section measuring up to 2.5mm.

In terms of connection technology, contact inserts, tool-free insulation displacement connections, Han-Quick Lock quick connection technology and tried and tested crimp connection technology are also available.

The panel feed-throughs are suitable for use with the Han PushPull variant 14, a standardised RJ45 connector offering IP 65/67 protection for industrial Profinet cabling. The new feed-throughs are available for circular and square panel cut-outs for integration into industrial devices and switch cabinets.

A key feature of these new devices is their significantly improved electromagnetic compatibility. The category 6 performance of the RJ45 female module offers system reserves that are high enough to carry not only standard industrial Ethernet but also 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet signals.

The RJ45 socket inserts have a 360° shield to increase electromagnetic compatibility and ensure interference immunity for the transmission path. Even at burst interference levels greater than 4kV, stable and secure industrial Ethernet transmission is guaranteed. The flexible grounding concept also provides users with a greater number of options.

To enable users to decide on the grounding concept for their equipment, RJ45 female connectors lock into the metal panel feed-through, making it potential free and therefore electrically insulated. This ensures that the RJ45 shield potential and the chassis ground are not connected by accident.

Users wishing to ground the RJ45 shield potential can clamp it to the metal panel feed-through or the RJ45 female connector via a blade connector. This effectively diverts electromagnetic interference coupling to the data shield and prevents it from entering the device.
