A compact controller with embedded Ethernet
13 June 2012
Omron has introduced a new version of the CP1L compact PLC, offering flexible Ethernet communications as standard – a feature that is traditionally only available in larger, modular PLCs. This enhanced version of the CP1L meets today’s machine control requirements for compact PLCs that are able to connect seamlessly with a wide variety of sensors and position control devices, as well as providing facilities for remote access, monitoring and data logging.

The embedded Ethernet port on the CP1L can be used for both programming and communications, and provides programmable connectivity to many Ethernet supported devices. With the Socket Services function, a flexible network connection is provided that enables users to adopt whatever Ethernet protocol they need for their application. Socket services supports standard Ethernet protocols including UDP, TCP and Modbus/TCP (using function blocks), enabling connection to a wide range of devices. In addition, the CP1L supports the Omron FINS Ethernet protocol for simple connection to other PLCs and HMIs.
Standardising on Ethernet for communications brings a number of advantages to OEMs; Ethernet is widely used and supported, cabling is cheaper than for serial connections, and cables can be up to 100m in length between nodes providing optimum network flexibility. The implementation of Ethernet in the CP1L allows up to three simultaneous connections over a single cable.
Three Ethernet enabled versions of the CP1L are available, offering 20, 30 or 40 I/O points, expandable to 160 I/O points. These new versions of the CP1L also include two 0-10V analogue inputs as standard. Where more analogue I/O is required, the CP1L can be expanded with new optional boards which add two further inputs, two further outputs, or both two inputs and two outputs per unit.
The CP1L has been developed specifically for machine builders to offer the simplicity of a compact PLC combined with the capability of a modular PLC. All models in the CP1L series provide four high-speed encoder inputs and two high-speed pulse outputs, together with many ready-to-use Function Blocks for easy positioning. A high level of expansion capability includes options for digital and analogue I/O, temperature inputs, and serial interface boards.
