Schunk introduces magnetic clamping technology
17 March 2006
Schunk has enlarged its stationary clamping product range with the acquisition of an established manufacturer of magnetic clamping products. The new Magnos magnetic clamping system is a work holding solution for rough or fine cutting applications on milling machines and machining centers.
The Magnos system comprises magnetic clamping plates that can be retrofitted to the Schunk Unilock quick change pallet system. This flexibility is matched by a range of plate sizes to meet the specific needs of the customer. The versatility of the magnetic clamping plates enables them to be used on a variety of machining tasks.
The clamping technology guarantees the user maximum flexibility regardless of manufacturing process. The advantage of magnetic clamping technology is that efficient five-sided machining is possible at very high holding forces, without any interfering contours of the clamping device.
Modern machine tools are designed for complex manufacturing operations that are conducted with a single set-up – this is often limited by the clamping equipment. The Magnos system enables the machine to reach its complete performance spectrum.
The electro permanent magnetic clamping technology from Schunk is suitable for a variety of industries including mould & die, aerospace, automotive and machine building. The Magnos system enables the user to safely and quickly clamp small or large workpieces made of alloyed or unalloyed steels, tool steels or ferrous steels with a high ferromagnetic content.
The electro-permanent magnets only require a brief amount of electricity to activate and deactivate the magnetic field. Available with 220 volt and 400 volt options, the uniform clamping force is possible thanks to the poles’ quadratic geometry. Reliable and robust clamping is guaranteed by the high holding forces of the Schunk magnets.
To meet individual requirements the Magnos system is available with 50, 75 and 100mm pole sizes to provide a range of holding forces. The pole extensions are available as accessories to improve workpiece location and to compensate for surface irregularities.
