Wide format, multi-material 3D printer creates 1,000x800x500mm model

28 April 2013

Large multi-material prototypes created directly from 3D CAD designs with a build chamber volume up to 1,000 mm by 800 mm by 500 mm and produced from a choice of over 120 different materials can now be created from the latest wide format Objet 1000 3D printer now available through SYS Systems.

The Objet range of additive layer manufacturing devices have the sole capability to combine different 3D printing materials within a single model that are almost indistinguishable from the final product due to its fine detailing.

The Objet 1000 combines the precision of inkjet-based 3D printing through eight individual print heads with a multi-material build capability taking in opaque, clear transparent, rubber-like flexible and a wide range of composites including ABS grade engineering plastic types.

The latest large format machine has high levels of versatility with a build resolution of 600 dpi in both X- and Y- axes and 1,600 dpi in Z with horizontal build layering as precise as 16 microns.  In addition, the machine is equally adept in producing very small, finely detailed 3D models.

Up to 16 separate materials can be used in build sessions to accuracy levels of between 20 and 85 microns for feature elements below 50mm and up to 0.3mm for full size tray build applications up to 1,000mm by 800mm by 500mm.

Complementing the 3D printer specification and performance criteria its software features incorporate easy material selection, suggested build, patterns, model orientation, speed and auto-placements as well as a slice-on-the-fly and part separation into sub assemblies.

The Objet 1000’s 3D printed models can be used for form, fit and functional verifications. Models can be drilled, painted, assembled and screwed together with the multi-layer printer able to embed topography, create soft-touch areas over mouldings, add transparent with opaque shades and create moving parts.  These can be seamlessly joined to achieve a true looking, fully assembled final product.

Materials are supplied by SYS in large 18kg resin cartridges which are replaceable in the machine during a print run without pausing the process.
