Hand-held enclosures for modern electronics

30 April 2013

Hammond Electronics' new Tablet and T case enclosures are suitable for a range of portable electronics applications across all industries.

The new 1599 Tablet enclosure is suitable for portable applications where touchscreens and electro-mechanical controllers such as joysticks and rollerballs are used. The 1553T range of T cases is designed for use in a wide variety of hand-held instrumentation, data capture and controller application across all industries.

The 1599 Tablet enclosure features a low profile rounded ergonomic design, which fits comfortably into the hand to prevent operator fatigue during extended period of use. Available as standard in RAL9011 black and RAL 7035 grey, the unit is moulded in UL94V-0 flame retardant ABS.

It is sealed to IP54, allowing it to be used both inside and outside, and has an easily machined removable panel for connectors, external power leads and switches. It is available with or without a battery compartment.

The 1599 measures 240 x 190 x 30mm, with ten PCB standoffs moulded into both the top and base sections to give a number of different mounting positions for circuit boards and other components.

The top has a 0.75mm inlay recess across the entire surface of the unit for mounting membrane keyboards if required; the removable panel, positioned on one side of the enclosure, is available in ABS or, optionally for remote control use, in IR translucent polycarbonate.

The enclosure is assembled with six machine screws, threaded into integral brass bushes in the top section, ensuring that if repetitive assembly and disassembly are required the sealing integrity of the unit is not compromised over time. The battery compartment accepts four AA or two PP9 batteries.

The new 1553T range of T cases is initially available in two sizes, 165 x 80 x 28mm and 210 x 100 x 32mm. The enclosures feature recessed areas for keypads and displays and are available with or without a battery compartment.

Versions without a battery box have two removable end panels; the battery versions have a single panel at the top of the unit. The battery box in the larger unit accepts 4 x AA or 2 x 9V cuboid batteries, 2 x AA or 1 x 9V in the smaller; connectors for both types are supplied. The removable plastic end panels are easily machined to provide cutouts to suit LEDs, connectors and switches, as required.

Moulded in flame retardant ABS, the units have a smooth curved shape that fits comfortably into the hand. They are produced in light grey or black, both with over-moulded contrasting soft side grips as standard. Both top and base are provided with PCB mounting standoffs and the two shells are assembled together with screws into brass inserts, allowing repeated access to the interior without degrading the closure.

All units can be supplied factory modified with machining and silk screening to the user’s specification; AutoCAD and PDF dimensioned drawings can be downloaded here
