Modular Machine Tool Drives Have Safety Built In

01 January 2004

Rexroth's IndraDrive M generation of modular machine tool drives features
a range of safety features integrated directly within the drive unit.
Response times are now a very rapid 2ms, ensuring fast reactions to any
detected errors. M generation drives are also equipped with a 'safe
operating hold', which ensures that the drives remain in position after
the guard door has been opened. Measurement checks, fault correction and
other similar manual operations can be carried out safely, without having
to disconnect the power. This means that the machine can be restarted
without any re-homing.

The operator can also define 'safe reduced speed', which allows the
process to be run at a slower speed under the observation of the machine
setter with the guard door open. A further safety feature is the ability
to define protected zones to make safe spaces off limits; a secure
absolute positional range can be activated for each axis.
