Compact low-cost relay is sealed for harsh 500A environments
10 August 2006
Designed to provide reliable long-life operation in harsh environments, the Kilovac EV200 compact, hermetically-sealed relay / contactor is now available from ACAL-Radiatron. The unit offers an
intrinsically safe solution for high-current applications up to 500A.
Typical applications include battery disconnect functions for hybrid fuel
cells and electric vehicles, from fork-lift trucks to plant machinery,
cranes, trains, marine, mobile power supplies and explosive environments
such as mines. The relay is also seen as an ideal solution for retrofit
applications such as the replacement of 'open' style traditional contactors
suffering from environmental ingression problems.
The device can be used for battery switching and back-up, DC voltage power
control, circuit protection and safety applications, or wherever safe and
reliable disconnection of high-currents is essential. An optional auxiliary
contact, also fully sealed, allows for easy monitoring of the contact
An integral coil economizer, requiring just 1.7W hold power at 12VDC, limits
back EMF to zero volts. The EV200 has a standard operational life in excess
of 1 million applications and current rating of 500A carry, 2000A interrupt
at 320VDC. In addition to reliable operation in challenging environments,
the sealed unit does not suffer from oxidation or contamination of coils or
contacts, further assuring reliability even during long periods of
A wide range of options is offered making application-specific solutions
particularly cost-effective. These include: Commercial and QPL relays;
MIL-R-83725; Voltage isolation to 70,000 volts; Service life of 10 million
cycles; Form types A, B, C, 2C, 4C, P and R; Flange, panel and PCB mounting;
and, optional coils, terminals, lead lengths and control-circuit connectors.
The versatile Kilovac EV200 has an operational temperature range of -40C to
+85C and weighs just 0.43kg. The relay / contactor is CE marked for EU
operation, meets AIAG QS9000 specifications and is US and Canadian UL File
