    £100 million fund to boost university and private collaboration opens for bids(14/05/2012)

    A new £100m investment fund to support research partnerships between universities, businesses, charities and philanthropic donors has opened for bids. Universities will be able to bid for between £10m and £35m per project and must be able to demonstrate that they can attract at least double the amount in private investment. Applications will be judged on value for money and how much they build on existing strong research capability.

    Government grants additional £6m for UK space technology(11/04/2012)

    As part of the National Space Technology Programme, the government is to grant nearly £6m to co-fund major new British research that will develop commercial products and services using space technology and data from space-based systems. The grant funding, from the UK Space Agency and the Technology Strategy Board, will support four major research and development consortium projects.

    Fund managers sought for non-domestic energy efficiency drive(28/03/2012)

    The UK Green Investments (UKGI) team from the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills is seeking expressions of interest from experienced fund managers to run government managed accounts of up to £100m to invest in the non-domestic energy efficiency infrastructure sector. Potential candidates will be responsible for a range of energy efficiency projects, including building retro fit, urban infrastructure and industrial energy efficiency.

    Government announces support for 19,000 new degree-level apprenticeships(01/12/2011)

    Business secretary Vince Cable has announced government funding in support of thousands of apprenticeships up to degree equivalent Some £18.7m from the Higher Apprenticeship Fund will support the development of 19,000 new Higher Apprenticeships in sectors including construction, advanced engineering, insurance and financial services. Around 250 employers, including Leyland Trucks, Unilever, TNT, and Burberry are set to benefit.

    UK research base most productive in the world(20/10/2011)

    The UK is a world-leader in science and research, according to a new report from Universities and Science Minister David Willetts. The ‘International Comparative Performance of the UK Research Base 2011’ report was compiled by Elsevier and published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. It shows that UK research attracts more citations per pound spent in overall research and development than any other country. It is also highly mobile, internationally competitive and diverse.

    Skills minister unveils new skills training programme for the welding sector(12/10/2011)

    Skills minister, John Hayes and Stephen McPartland MP, joined North Hertfordshire College and specialist welding products supplier, Weldability Sif, last week to unveil a new skills training programme for the welding sector. The Weldability Sif Foundation Charity has been specifically formed and registered with the Charities Commission to encourage the development of new welder training facilities across the UK and will be working with many independent Skills Training provider.

    Government launches 'Peer to Patent' online patent application tool(01/06/2011)

    A new tool designed to help improve the patent application process has been launched by the Minister for Intellectual Property, Baroness Wilcox. 'Peer to Patent' is a review website which allows experts from the scientific and technology community to view and comment on patent applications. During the six month pilot up to 200 applications in the computing field will be gradually uploaded for review on the website.

    Government invests £200m in technology centres(26/10/2010)

    More than GBP200m will be invested by the government in a network of Technology and Innovation Centres to drive growth in the UK high-tech sectors. The centres, which were announced by prime minister David Cameron in a speech to the CBI conference, will bridge the gap between universities and businesses, helping to commercialise the outputs of Britain’s world-class research base.
