Bearing systems are critical parts in a machine – and their failure could have catastrophic and costly consequences. The bearing design has a major impact on reliability, especially in extreme operating conditions, including high or low temperatures, vacuum and corrosive atmospheres.

Increasing numbers of smaller, more cost effective telecommunications satellites are being launched into the Earth’s orbit, which has led to a growing need for high precision, high reliability bearings to support on-board sub-systems such as reaction wheels and other critical mechanisms, says Gary Hughes, Product Engineering Manager at Schaeffler subsidiary, The Barden Corporation (UK) Ltd.

Bearings for medical and dental applications tend to be at the top end in terms of design and materials technology. Nick Dowding says the bearing requirements of the medical and dental sectors usually equal – and, in some cases, even exceed - those demanded by aerospace manufacturers.
